About the role

You will join our Data Science & Innovation Team, an exciting area where you will be working with unique datasets, advanced analytical techniques and modern tools to deliver insights and data products that will transform operational processes and empower senior decision-makers.   

Examples of the kind of projects you’ll be able to work on:

  • building machine learning models to predict hospital attendance and to predict demand for critical services during the coronavirus pandemic.

  • using Natural Language Processing to understand patient experience and enrich new datasets.

  • reviewing new analytical methods to measure hospital mortality.

As a Principal Data Scientist you will:

  • Embrace innovation, flexibly using the best tools for the job (usually open source), leveraging a powerful data platform that is built specifically for analytical use, and working with incredibly rich health datasets that are unique in the world.

  • Have an enthusiasm for Data Science / Machine Learning, and for expanding the team’s (and your own) analytical competence

  • Share responsibility for building the data science specialism within NHS Digital and ensuring that our team is a great place for data scientists to work.

  • Work in small agile squads, to deliver prioritised work packages from the discovery stage through to deployment as live services or high impact analytical outputs.

About you
Some of the key areas you’ll have skills and experience you'll bring: 

  • Analytics: Advanced specialist data science skills – such as machine learning, data linkage, information retrieval. Experience of applying these skills to deliver business value.

  • Professional Standards: Developed knowledge of professional standards and their application to assure the quality of analytical work.

  • Achieving impact with analysis: Skilled in shaping analytical projects to meet customer requirements. Experience communicating complex and technical information to non-technical customers and stakeholders at all levels.

  • Data and software engineering: Specialised working knowledge of databases, building data pipelines and working with large / unstructured datasets. Highly developed knowledge of current analytical development tools (e.g. python, R); expertise in good software engineering practices for building data products.

  • Delivery: Experience of leading on a range of projects, allocating work to and mentoring other staff to deliver quality outcomes.

  • Qualifications: Education to a Master’s degree level in a numerate discipline, or an equivalent level of knowledge.
